CPTSD (chronic or complex) occurs when we are exposed to multiple or prolonged traumatic events over an extended period. Survivors of all forms of abuse, neglect, & domestic violence, are impacted in their overall health and wellness.
Trauma often comes from unexpected events that are too intense for someone to handle. This could be things like accidents, natural disasters, or personal attacks.
Just like a physical injury, trauma is like an emotional wound. If not cared for properly, it can affect a person for a long time. People who have experienced trauma might feel very scared, anxious, or sad. They might have trouble sleeping, feel jumpy, or avoid certain places or activities that remind them of the event.
It’s important to know that feeling this way after a traumatic event is a normal reaction. It’s the mind and body’s way of trying to process and understand what happened.
Just like with physical wounds, emotional wounds from trauma take time to heal. With the right support, such as talking to someone who understands or getting professional help, people can recover and feel better over time.
